Cataracts in Dogs, The Treatment and Appearance of Dog Cataracts

Cataracts in dogs is something you might notice during your dog grooming time. This is a fairly common occurrence in older dogs, but can also happen in younger dogs.

An example of the breeds of dogs that this can happen to at a younger age would be German Shepard, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels.

The problem in older dogs usually rears its ugly head after the dog has reached six years or older.

This problem shows itself as an opaque or whitish color of the eye. It starts in the center and gradually expands to cover the whole eye.

I do not know of any treatment for cataracts except for surgery. This is an expensive but effective treatment in most dog cataracts.

There are canine nutritional supplements available to help slow the growth in some types of dog cataracts. They are not a cure and may not be effective in all cases.

All this should be discussed with your veterinarian and he or she will lead you down the right path for your dog’s treatment.
