Instructions for Expressing Anal Glands on Your Dog

Expressing anal glands is part of the dog grooming process.

If your dog is scooting, or dragging his rear end on the ground like he has an itch he needs to scratch, chewing or licking at his rear end or there is an odor you’re not familiar with coming from his rear, it could be infected or impacted anal glands. It may also just be full and in need of expressing

Do all dogs need to have their anal glands expressed? Absolutely not. Still some dogs need to have their anal glands expressed on a regular basis.

To empty your dog’s anal glands you will want to put your thumb on one side of the anus and your fingers on the other side at approximately the 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock position Push in slightly and gently squeeze. Be gentle, you don’t want to cause injury to your dog.

See the photo below for placement. My recommendation is that you make sure the palm of your hand is covering the anus. A full anal gland can release in any direction.

You may want to have a Kleenex in your hand for the anal gland to empty into or make sure you have your dog in a sink or bathtub. It can be messy and a bit smelly.

If you have any question about this process ask your veterinarian or dog groomer to show you how it is done.
