The Irish Water Spaniel, Hypo-allergenic Dog for the Allergy Sufferer

The Irish Water Spaniel is purported by the American Kennel Club to be one of the breeds of dogs that are a hypo-allergenic dog. He sheds very little and has little dander. A good combination for the allergy sufferer.

This is a big dog that was used as a retriever due to his soft mouth. That combined with being a sturdy dog and a strong swimmer made him ideal for use in hunting.

This breed has been around for centuries but it was in the mid 1800’s that the breed type was set to the standards we now know as the water spaniel of today. He is also the largest of the spaniel breeds.

In this breed the height, measured from the withers, should be 22 to 24 inches for dogs and 21 to 23 inches for bitches and weighing 45 to 65 pounds being proportionate with height and substance.

He loves the water and should have plenty of room to run. He is a sturdy strong dog belonging to the sporting dog class of the American Kennel Club

Dog grooming for this breed should be done every 4 weeks for a full groom and then you should use your dog brushes and dog grooming combs on a weekly basis to keep him mat free and the loose hair out.
